Colonial Day 2018
10:30 AM – 3 PM
at Middletown Presbyterian Church 273 S Old Middletown Rd, Media PA
As Middletown Presbyterian Church approaches its 300th anniversary in 2020, members will host their sixth annual Colonial Day Celebration on Sunday, September 16. The free festivities provide a glimpse into the world of the earliest settlers of Middletown Township.
The day begins at 10:30am, with a worship service patterned after the style of the day, complete with a “tithingman” – armed with his feather and knob to discourage rowdiness and napping.
Following the service, a meal of typical 18th-century fare – chicken-corn chowder, ham, baked beans, green beans, corn and brown breads, turkey, cheddar and chutney on biscuits, fruit pies and Colonial cookies – will be available for purchase. There will also be a handmade “Jacob’s Ladder” scrap quilt for raffle.
From noon through 3:00pm, various games and crafts will be offered for both children and adults, along with demonstrations of spinning, blacksmithing, beekeeping, and bobbin lace-making Colonial enactors from the Lazaretto will explain how the Yellow Fever epidemic affected the area, a display of tools will be provided by the Thomas Massey House, and a colonial soldier will conduct a “muster” for all ages. The Marple-Newtown Community Band will present a concert of colonial music and visitors will be invited to participate in colonial dancing with the Tapestry Dancers.
Tours of the historic cemetery will feature graves of Revolutionary war soldiers and the probable site of the original church building, and several first-person narrators will portray prominent community members of the era. On hand will be representatives from several local historical societies with fascinating stories of the past!
